Microsoft finally revealed its long-awaited and oft-leaked Windows Phone 8.1 update at the Build 2014 conference on Wednesday. At the same time Microsoft released Windows Phone 8.1, it also announced Microsoft is to release Windows 8.1 Update 1 on April 8. Windows Phone 8.1 is a sweeping refocusing of the Windows Phone vision, adding some much-needed features to the mobile operating system – including the grand unveiling of Cortana, Microsoft's new digital assistant.

Check the new features of Windows Phone 8.1 Update here:

New Features of Windows Phone 8.1 Update

The real star of the Windows Phone 8.1 show is Cortana, the virtual assistant that's Microsoft's answer to Google Now and Siri. It completely replaces the standard Bing search interface in Windows Phone. But what can it actually do? Cortana can handle the usual tasks that you'd expect of a modern digital assistant: It can make calls and send messages, as well as jot down reminders. Actually, Cortana's kind of a blend of Google Now and Siri. Cortana has a Siri-esque personality, responding to personal questions from Belfiore with jokes.

Just like Office Mobile for Windows Phone, we are making Office Mobile for iPhone and Android phones free for everyone. With Office Mobile, you have the ability to view and edit your Office content on the go.  Office Mobile is available in the App Store and Google Play.

Action Center

As previously leaked, Windows Phone 8.1 adds a long-awaited notification center – dubbed "Action Center" – which gathers your new messages in a central location and provides quick access to four basic phone functions, such as turning on Wi-Fi, GPS, or Airplane mode.

Developers will also be able to create custom lock-screen experiences that users can choose to use. The Windows Phone 8.1 update also adds new Start screen personalization options, including the ability to add more tiles to the screen or use a custom image as your phone's background image.

Home Screen Improvements

With Windows Phone now powering big-screen phones like Lumia 1320, Microsoft is added a new option for home screen management - high density. This will allow users to put more tiles on the home screen.

With Windows Phone 8.1, users will also be able to put a wallpaper - or rather background wallpaper - of their choice. If a wallpaper has been set, the tiles will be transparent.

Swype-like Keyboard

The keyboard in Windows Phone 8.1 supports "glide typing", a method made popular by Swype app on Android. Instead of tapping on alphabets, in this mode users can glide their finger on the screen from one alphabet to next to type a word.

Better App Store

Microsoft has introduced new interface in the app store. This means better apps will get better visibility.

  • Windows Phone 8.1 will add several security-related features for enterprise users. It includes support for VPN.
  • Windows Phone 8.1 will come with Internet Explorer 11.
  • Windows Phone 8.1 features more comprehensive integration with Skype.

With Windows Phone 8.1's fast and fluid user interface, it wins almost universal praise. After viewing all the features of Windows Phone 8.1, you can enjoy it much more.
