How to Change Mac User Account Password

Nowadays, more and more people aware the importance of data security on Mac and most of them have already set a password. Whenever you need to log in macOS, download new software or delete some files, password will always be required. Way 1: Use Another Account to Reset The Lost Password

If you are using different administrator account on your Mac, you can use another account to login and change Mac admin password without old password or disc.

  • Login macOS with the account that you know the password.
  • Open System Preferences > Users & Groups. Click the Lock icon in the bottom left of the window and then enter the password.

Way 2: Reset Mac Admin Password Using Apple ID

Some users have set up allow resetting with Apple ID on their account, this is also an easy option to hack into locked macOS.

  • Typing a wrong password 3 times at the login screen and you’ll see a message displaying the password hint and the option to reset password using Apple ID, click the link to go on.

Way3: Reset Password on Mac Using Recovery Mode

When failed to change password with Apple ID, you can boot your computer from recovery mode and then reset admin password on Mac OS X/Yosemite/El Captian/Sierra without losing data.

  • Reboot your Mac and hold command + R keys, continue holding the keys until you see the loading bar appear.
  • Click “Utilities” and select “Terminal”, type “resetpassword” and press “return” to open Reset Password utility.

  • Click the Apple menu and select “OS X Utilities” -> “Quit OS X Utilityies”, this will reboot your computer and apply the password.

Way 4: Change Password on Mac with Reset Password Assistant

If you have enabled FileVault on Mac, you are able to reset forgotten admin password on Mac with FileVault.

  • When FileVault is on, wait a minute in the login screen and you’ll see a message saying that you can shut down your Mac using power button. Press and hold power button to turn off Mac.
  • Now press the power button again to turn on Mac and you’ll see a “Reset Password” window.

  • Once the process completes, click “Restart” and log in computer with the new password.

Way 5: Use the Installer CD to Create A New Password

Some users may have only one admin account and never enable Apple ID or FileValut feature, the above methods just become useless. Luckily they can still create a new password using the original macOS X install disc.

  • Turn off Mac and then power it on, insert the disc and hold down the C key to boot Mac from the disc’s version of macOSX.
  • Choose “Reset Password” from the Utility menu from the top of the screen.
  • Select the hard disc volume and the name of the original administrator account, enter a new password and click “Save”.
