In Windows 7, it is quite easy to get into the Safe Mode by pressing Shift + F8. But why it doesn't work in Windows 8.1? Actually, it's not so that difficult. Here introduces 3 handy ways to get into Safe Mode in Windows 8.1 and 8.

Way 1: Using Windows System Configuration Tool

This method can be used in both Windows 8.1 and 8 to get into Safe Mode.

• Step 1. Click Windows + R to pull up the Run dialog box, and type msconfig.exe. This will launch the System Configuration Utility.
  
  
• Step 2. In the utility, click the Boot tab and under Boot options, check the Safe boot box. Hit OK when it is done.
  
  
• Step 3. Here you can restart your computer. Whether you doit right there and then or later, the next boot will put your machine into Safe Mode on Windows 8.1 and 8.

Way 2: Use Shift + Restart button

This can also be used in Windows 8.1 and 8 computer.

• Step 1. Press the Power button at the Windows login screen or in the Settings charm. Then, press and hold the Shift key on your keyboard and click Restart.
  
  
• Step 2. Then, a window will show some options to choose. Press Troubleshoot.
  
  
• Step 3. Next, hit Advanced options followed by Windows Startup Settings from the next screen.
  
  
• Step 4. Now you are informed that you are about to restart in order to change several Windows options, including enabling Safe Mode. Press Restart.
  
  
• Step 5. After it restarts, you will get nine options, including Safe Mode, Safe Mode with Networking and Safe Mode with Command Prompt.
  
  
  
  
  • F4 for Safe Mode
  • F5 for Safe Mode with Networking
  • F6 for Safe Mode with Command Prompt

Based on your choice, Windows 8.1 and 8 will boot accordingly.

Way 3: Use F8 or Shift + F8

In Windows 7, you can apply this way to access Safe Mode. But press Shift + F8 before Windows 8.1 and 8 starts loading so that you make it start the recovery mode, from where you can boot into Safe Mode.

But if you have modern PC with a UEFI BIOS and a fast SSD drive, there's no way to boot into Safe Mode in Windows 8.1 and 8 computer.
